Unit Counselor – Southern Oregon Camp Kiwanis
Position Description: Unit counselors are mature adults who supervise a unit of 4 – 6 youth, including campers with physical disabilities and their typically developing peers.
Report to: the Camp Director and/or the Director of Medical Services.
Qualifications: Must be over 25 years of age. Position requires maturity, respect, and leadership skills. Some lifting may be required. Willingness to work hard, have fun, and act as a role model. Must pass a police background check. CPR and first aid training recommended.
Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Supervise a unit of 4 – 6 youth and young adults, including campers with special needs and their typically developing peers.
2. Assist peer counselors with the daily routines of campers, including dressing, toileting, bathing, mealtimes, and planned recreational activities.
3. Assist with team-lifting and transfers of campers with mobility impairments.
4. Safeguard the well-being of campers and peer counselors at all times, being mindful of physical safety, health, and emotional well-being. Immediately report any concerns to the Director of Medical Services or the Camp Director.
5. Participate in the planned camping activities with a sense of adventure, enthusiasm, and fun. Support and encourage the campers and peer counselors to do so as well.
6. Promote team-building and camaraderie within the unit.
7. Demonstrate respect for teen culture while providing appropriate adult supervision.
8. Maintain confidentiality and respect for the privacy of all campers, peers, and staff.
9. Participate in staff training prior to campers’ arrival at camp.
10. Other duties as assigned.
