Peer Counselor Southern Oregon Camp Kiwanis
Position Description: Peer counselors are youth aged 14 25 who work and play in partnership with campers who have physical disabilities, assisting them to participate fully in the activities of the camp. Room and board are provided.
Reports to: the Unit Counselor, the Camp Director and/or the Director of Medical Services.
Qualifications: Age 14 - 25. Position requires maturity, respect, and responsibility for caring for the needs of others. Some lifting may be required. Willingness to work hard, have fun, and act as a role model. Must pass a police background check. CPR and first aid training recommended.
Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Share quarters with an assigned camper and assist with the daily routines, including dressing, toileting, bathing, mealtimes, and planned recreational activities.
2. Act as a role model, a mentor, and a friend.
3. Assist with team-lifting and transfers of campers with mobility impairments.
4. Safeguard the well-being of the assigned camper, being mindful of physical safety, health, and emotional well-being. Immediately report any concerns to the Director of Medical Services or the Camp Director.
5. Participate in the planned camping activities with a sense of adventure, enthusiasm, and fun. Support and encourage the campers to do so as well.
6. Maintain confidentiality and respect for the privacy of all campers, peers, and staff.
7. Participate in staff training prior to campers arrival at camp.
8. Other duties as assigned.
